Police arrest mother of 11 over alleged attempt to sell two sons in Anambra.

A 38-year-old woman, Chinyere Chukwu, have been arrested by policemen in Anambra State after attempting to sell two of her sons for the sum of N1.8m

The arrest, conducted by the Anambra State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Hon Ify Obinabo, was prompted by a tip about the illicit transaction.

The Commissioner, assuming the role of a prospective buyer, successfully apprehended Chinyere and her 17-year-old daughter, Joy Chukwu, during the operation at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Center in Awka.

During an interrogation at the center, Chinyere disclosed that the dire economic situation pushed her and her daughter to consider selling two of her eleven children.

She explained that the financial strain made it challenging to provide for all of them, leading to the decision to sell two sons in order to secure funds for the education and well-being of the remaining siblings.

In negotiations with the undercover Commissioner, Chinyere initially quoted a price of N1 million for each boy.

However, after persistent bargaining, she agreed to the sum of N1.8 million for both children.

Shockingly, Chinyere admitted that her interest in the distressing trade was sparked by her neighbor’s successful sale of one of her own children.

This marked Chinyere’s first attempt at engaging in such a disturbing business.

Hailing from Ozubulu but residing in Okija, Chinyere revealed that she had only two children with her late husband and acquired the remaining nine after his demise.

Her 17-year-old daughter, the eldest among the siblings, explained that the motive behind the sale was to finance her tertiary education with the proceeds.

The Women Affairs Commissioner ordered that the remaining children be taken into the custody of the state government for proper care.

Additionally, the neighbor, who was involved in the illicit trade, is set to be apprehended, and contact tracing will be initiated to retrieve the child already sold.

The incident highlights the desperate measures some individuals resort to amid challenging economic circumstances.
