24 abducted Kebbi Schoolgirls regain freedom after 8 days in captivity

All 24 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, in Kebbi State have regained their freedom eight days after terrorists launched a pre-dawn attack on the school.

The students were taken hostage on November 17, 2025, in an assault that claimed the life of a vice-principal and left a security guard injured.

One of the girls managed to escape shortly after the incident, leaving 24 others in captivity until their rescue was confirmed on November 25.

Governor Nasir Idris, who received the girls officially, announced that no ransom was paid to secure their release.

He commended the security operatives whose coordinated efforts led to the breakthrough.

President Bola Tinubu welcomed the development and urged security agencies to sustain intensified operations across the country to ensure the rescue of victims still held by various criminal groups.

The rescue has brought relief to families and heightened calls for strengthened security around schools, especially in vulnerable communities in the North.
