Black Sunday, as herdsmen reprisal attack claims Ondo farmer’s life
It was a black Sunday at Uba Oka in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo when a 36-year-old farmer was killed on his farm by men suspected to be herdsmen.
A source disclosed to our correspondent that the deceased farmer, Sunday Ayeni, had his farm vandalised by herdsmen last week. Security agents and community elders intervened, restoring peace as the herdsmen paid an undisclosed amount to the late farmer as compensation.
The source revealed that the herdsmen were not pleased with the settlement, leading to a reprisal attack on the farmer.
The deceased went to his farm with his dog as usual yesterday, but when he didn’t return on time, a search party was organised.
They discovered his lifeless body in a pool of his own blood, with his dog and cutlass beside him.
A farmer and community leader, Mr Pius Imoru, disclosed that the whole community was in mourning, adding that farmers in Uba Oka, Akoko, are now scared of going to their farms due to the threat of herdsmen attacks.
A non-governmental organisation in Akoko, the Akoko Security, Peace and Development Council, under the leadership of Major General Dayo Olukoju, condemned the act and called on communities to be security-conscious.
As at the time of filing this report, the police and the Amotekun security outfit are trailing the assailant and efforts to speak with the police in Oka Akoko has proved abortive.
