ICRC Welcomes Ceasefire In Hezbollah-Israel Armed Conflict
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has welcomed the ceasefire in the armed conflict between Hezbollah and Israel in the Middle East.
The Committee’s Public Relations Officer in Nigeria, Aliyu Dawobe, conveyed this in a press statement issued yesterday, emphasizing that the ceasefire brings a glimmer of hope for stability in a region exhausted by conflict.
According to the statement, the ICRC urged all parties to uphold and enforce the ceasefire across all levels of command to ensure much-needed relief for civilians on both sides of the border.
The organization also called for unrestricted access to enable the rapid and unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid, expressing regret over the devastating impact of the conflict on civilians.
It noted that many civilians have been killed or injured, and over a million people have been displaced in Lebanon and Israel.
The ICRC highlighted its ongoing efforts to assist those most in need, supporting initiatives to create conditions for families to safely return home and rebuild their lives.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with partners in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to distribute essential items, provide medical supplies, and help repair vital infrastructure such as water and electricity systems.
While acknowledging the ceasefire as a positive step, the ICRC warned that the region remains tense and the humanitarian situation in Gaza is unacceptable.
The organization reiterated its urgent call for the respect of international humanitarian law (IHL), the protection of civilians and civilian objects, and an unhindered increase in humanitarian assistance.
The ICRC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to supporting affected communities and urged all parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians.
