Growing up in Okene, Kogi State, I am a witness to the firsthand transformative impact of Alh. Yahaya Bello’s administration as Executive Governor of Kogi State from 2016-2024. His leadership has been a game-changer for the Ebira people, restoring our pride in our heritage. Unlike in the past when we hesitated to reveal our middle names outside Okene, we can now proudly claim our identity. Yahaya Bello’s administration brought about a sense of unity and progress, allowing us to hold our heads high as Ebira people.
Before his administration, Okene was plagued by violence, arson, and killings, fueled by politics of bitterness and selfishness. The community was fragmented, with leaders more interested in personal gain than the welfare of their people.
However, with Bello’s emergence as governor, the narrative changed. He brought a sense of unity and purpose to the community, and his leadership style was characterised by inclusivity and empowerment. Under his administration, the Ebira people began to reclaim their identity and pride in their heritage.
One of Bello’s most significant achievements was bringing high-profile dignitaries to Kogi State, Okene, to be precise. He successfully invited President Muhammadu Buhari to commission legacy projects in Ebiraland, a feat no previous governor had achieved. Other notable figures, including Yemi Osinbajo and top government officials from Aso Villa, also visited Okene during his tenure.
Bello’s leadership also focused on building and empowering future leaders. He created opportunities for young people to develop their skills and assume positions of responsibility. One notable example is the emergence of Ododo as his successor, demonstrating Bello’s commitment to nurturing and promoting talented individuals.
Throughout his administration, Bello demonstrated a strong sense of vision and purpose. He worked tirelessly to promote the interests of Kogi State and its people, and his efforts have had a lasting impact on all. As someone who witnessed the challenges faced by the Ebira people, it is clear that Bello’s leadership has been a game-changer, and his legacy will continue to inspire and empower future generations.
