The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Sunday, reaffirmed his cordial relationship with the incumbent Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, emphasising that their bond is rooted in mutual love, respect, and a shared commitment to the development of the state.
Speaking during a thanksgiving Mass marking his 60th birthday at St. Martins’ Catholic Church, Isan-Ekiti, Dr Fayemi praised Governor Oyebanji for his exemplary leadership and capacity to drive all-round development in Ekiti.
He commended the Governor’s inclusive leadership style, noting that it has fostered stability, progress, and unity in the state.
According to him, Oyebanji has upheld the vision of the state’s founding fathers by ensuring governance transcends political divides, adding that he could not have wished for a better successor.
Reflecting on his milestone birthday, the former Governor expressed gratitude to God, describing the occasion as a moment of introspection and rededication to public service.
He reiterated his commitment to the development of Ekiti State and Nigeria at large.
“I am a product of grace and have countless reasons to be thankful at sixty,” he said.
“I also want to thank our Governor for making me proud. Things could have gone awry, but he too is a product of grace.
“That is why, despite the challenges that come with politics, we have maintained a cordial relationship built on mutual love and respect.
” So, all those stories you read on social media are just for entertainment.”
Addressing the presence of former Governor Segun Oni at the event, Fayemi said:
“Many may wonder why Governor Segun Oni is here. During his birthday, I spent the entire day with him. If Governor Fayose were around, he would also have been here without hesitation.
” That is the Ekiti we envision; a state that is not divided by political lines.
“While we may belong to different political parties, there is one party we all share: the ‘Ekiti Progressive Party.’ And our Governor is upholding that vision.”
In his remarks, Governor Oyebanji described Fayemi’s 60th birthday as a celebration of a life dedicated to service and excellence.
He lauded the former Governor as a visionary leader whose contributions to Ekiti remain unmatched.
“The people of Ekiti are immensely proud of your achievements and deeply indebted to you for your transformative leadership,” Oyebanji said.
“The only thing I want to say is thank you for your support and guidance.
” Thank you for all you have done for Ekiti people, for your mentees across the world, and for your selfless service.
“I also extend my gratitude to Erelu Bisi Fayemi and Folajimi for sharing you with us. We are proud of you; your sixty years have been a journey of progressive impact.”
Delivering a homily titled Awareness of God’s Goodness, the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, described Fayemi as a unique leader whose life has been a testament to service to God and humanity.
Bishop Ajakaye highlighted Fayemi’s unwavering commitment to integrity, justice, and selflessness, noting that these virtues have defined both his leadership and personal life.
The event was graced by prominent personalities, including the first civilian Governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Niyi Adebayo; former Governor Segun Oni; Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye; wife of the Governor, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji; and Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye.
Others present were former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Modupe Adelabu; former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Chief Oladokun; former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran; Chairman of CAVISTA Holdings, Mr John Olajide; Chairman of Afenifere Renewal Group, Hon. Wale Osun; and APC Ekiti State Chairman, Barrister Sola Elesin.
Serving and former members of the National Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, and State House of Assembly members were also in attendance.
The Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Oba Ayorinde Ilori-Faboro, led a delegation of traditional rulers to the event.
