Passport Fees Soar Again: Nigeria Immigration Slams 100% Hike

Barely one year after an increase in the cost of the international passport, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has imposed a significant increase of 100 per cent, effective September 1, 2025.

According to the new fee structure, a 32-page, five-year validity passport will now cost ₦100,000, doubling from the previous ₦50,000. Similarly, a 64-page, ten-year validity passport will rise to ₦200,000 from ₦100,000, continuing a trend that began on September 1, 2024, when fees were raised from ₦35,000 and ₦70,000, respectively.

The NIS explained that the fee increase aims to uphold the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Passport. In a statement, the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, emphasised the commitment to balancing quality service with accessibility for all Nigerians. Notably, fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged.

This latest increase has sparked concerns about the affordability and accessibility of passports for ordinary Nigerians. But the NIS has assured the public that the increase is necessary to maintain the quality and security features of the Nigerian passport. However, the impact on the average Nigerian remains to be seen.

In a separate development, the Alausa Ikeja office of the NIS in Lagos has committed to seamless production and delivery of passports, with a production and delivery time of three weeks from the capturing process to delivery.
