Controversy has erupted over the sudden death of former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, following allegations that one of his wives may have played a role in the tragedy.

Akingboye reportedly passed away last Wednesday at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos. He was 60.

His Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, confirmed the incident in a statement.

“Otunba Akingboye passed away earlier today at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos.

He was a man of unwavering integrity, an accomplished businessman, philanthropist, visionary leader, and community builder who lived a fulfilled and purposeful life.

“He is survived by his wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings.

Burial arrangements and further details will be communicated in due course,” the statement read.

However, fresh controversy has trailed the circumstances surrounding his death.

A source told SaharaReporters on Saturday that Akingboye may not have died a natural death but was allegedly a victim of domestic violence.

“The SDP candidate in Ondo State who recently died was killed by his wife.

She allegedly killed him by pushing him off the balcony,” the source claimed, urging security agencies to unravel the truth.

Meanwhile, disturbing images of Akingboye’s lifeless body, trending online, showed bruises and deep cuts on his head and neck, further fuelling suspicions.

The late politician was the SDP flag bearer in the November 16, 2024 Ondo governorship election, where he contested against Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 12 other candidates.

Police authorities confirmed that they had launched a discreet investigation into the case, vowing to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the true cause of his death.

Until his passing, Akingboye was widely respected for his philanthropy, business acumen, and political ideals.

Activists, civil society groups, and concerned Nigerians have since demanded a thorough and transparent probe, warning against any attempt to cover up the circumstances surrounding his demise.
