Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has formally handed over the leadership of the electoral body to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as the Acting Chairman.

The handover took place on Tuesday during an ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Announcing the transition, Professor Yakubu urged INEC staff and management to give their full support and cooperation to his successor.

“I have today handed over to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. I urge all commissioners and directors to give her the same level of cooperation and dedication that you have shown me,” Yakubu stated.

The handover signifies a temporary leadership shift within the commission as preparations intensify for upcoming electoral activities across the country.

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned lawyer and administrator, has been part of the INEC management team since her appointment as a National Commissioner. She is expected to sustain the commission’s ongoing electoral reforms and institutional strengthening efforts
