Man killed during fight over girlfriend in Yobe
A love rivalry turned deadly in Yobe State after a 20-year-old man, Jibrin Lamido, was brutally hacked to death during a fight with another suitor in Gurdadi village, Yusufari Local Government Area. Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command, Dungus Abdulkareem, said the altercation occurred around 2 a.m. on Monday. “Jibrin Lamido and the suspect were fighting over a lady when the suspect attacked him with a cutlass. He died from his injuries shortly after,” Abdulkareem told PUNCH Metro on Wednesday. According to him, both the suspect and the lady involved are currently on the run, while police operatives have launched a manhunt to apprehend them. Counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, also shared details of the tragedy in a post on X, revealing that the fight began after Jibrin visited the home of his girlfriend, Saratu Gata, in Kalameri village. An eyewitness reportedly said the suspect arrived unexpectedly, took the woman away, and challenged Jibrin to follow them “if he was truly a man.”
The confrontation escalated into a violent fight, during which the suspect allegedly struck Jibrin on the neck with a cutlass, leaving him with fatal injuries. Security operatives from the Kumaganam Outstation rushed him to the General Hospital, Kumaganam, where doctors confirmed him dead. His remains were later released to his family for burial after an autopsy. This latest tragedy comes just days after a similar incident in Ilorin, Kwara State, where a 25-year-old man, Hammed Tunde, was stabbed to death by his friend during an argument over a woman. The recurring cases have reignited conversations on the urgent need for conflict resolution education and emotional control among young people to prevent such avoidable deaths
