RUGIPO honours Ondo Energy Commissioner, Alabi, with excellence award

In recognition of his notable contributions to the state’s energy sector, the Faculty of Engineering Technology, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), has presented Ondo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Jaiyeola Alabi, with the Award of Excellence in Energy Development.

The award was presented during the Faculty’s 3rd International Conference themed “Engineering Innovation for a Sustainable Security System.”

According to a statement signed by Debbie Funmilayo, Information Officer, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the recognition celebrates the Commissioner’s commitment to transforming and advancing the state’s energy and mineral resources sector.

Speaking with journalists after receiving the award, Engr. Alabi expressed appreciation, noting that the recognition was significant because his career began in a polytechnic.

He also commended the choice of theme, describing it as timely given Nigeria’s prevailing security concerns. “Security has become a major challenge in Nigeria and awareness is highly important.

The topic has clearly addressed this, and such lectures should be taught frequently to raise consciousness among Nigerians,” he said.

Keynote speaker, Engr. Kehinde Temikotan, delivered a comprehensive analysis of the evolving security landscape, the future of security systems, and implications for engineering education.

He emphasised that security should be seen not only as a tool for protection but also as a safeguard for human life, liberty and the environment.

Lead paper presenter, Engr. Dr. Stephen Ibijola, highlighted the relevance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for future development planning.

He explained the social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainability and called for integrating digital and cyber-security systems.

According to him, inter-disciplinary collaboration is vital for developing security systems that can meet both present and future needs.

In his goodwill message, the Olowo of Owo, Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, represented by the Olupenme of Ipeme, Oba Samuel Daramola, urged engineers to move beyond theoretical research and embrace practical, innovative solutions.

The event also featured the presentation of awards to distinguished individuals for exemplary leadership, innovation, and contributions to academia and society.

Dignitaries at the conference included the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Ayorinde Olawoye (represented by Engr. Ibidapo Ojo); Acting Rector of RUGIPO, Dr. Olorunwa Adegun; Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Technology, Engr. Samuel Adepo; Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Oluwaseun Adeleye; the Oloba of Uso, Engr. (Dr.) Ademola Oyinbade; and several royal fathers.
