Akoko North East LG Boss moves to curb crime, launches rider registration, tracking scheme

Determined to curb rising security concerns and improve accountability among transport operators, the Chairman of Akoko North East Local Government Area, Alhaji Mohammed Mutiu Olawale, has partnered Hikom Energy Limited to begin a comprehensive registration of all commercial motorcycle (okada) and tricycle (keke napep) riders operating within the area.
According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Chairman on New Media, Agun Abiola, the initiative was unveiled at a stakeholders’ meeting with leaders of riders’ unions on Tuesday.
The Chairman was represented by his Vice Chairman, Hon. Folasade Gold.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman, the Vice Chairman said the programme underscored the administration’s unwavering commitment to safety, welfare and sustainable development across the local government.
She explained that the official commencement date and registration guidelines would be announced soon, urging all motorcycle and tricycle operators to participate in the exercise aimed at building a safer and more organised transport system.
As part of the partnership, an operational office will be established within the local government secretariat to enable Hikom Energy Limited to track and recover stolen motorcycles and tricycles.
The system, according to officials, is designed to ensure swift tracing and recovery of stolen vehicles.
Colonel Saka disclosed that each rider would undergo a comprehensive registration process, including the capture of personal details such as a recent photograph, residential address, National Identification Number (NIN) and the vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
He added that duly registered and approved riders would be issued official identification cards and high-visibility reflective vests bearing unique identification numbers to enhance identification and accountability.
The council said the measures are expected to strengthen rider identification, curb criminal activities and significantly improve road safety within the area.
While acknowledging the vital role played by motorcycle and tricycle operators in providing fast and affordable transportation to residents, the Chairman noted that the initiative also seeks to address growing security concerns linked to unregistered operators who may exploit motorcycles for unlawful purposes.
In their response, representatives of the riders’ unions welcomed the initiative and pledged full cooperation, commending the Chairman’s dedication to security and community welfare.
The administration further noted that the introduction of reflective vests would improve rider visibility, particularly during low-light conditions, thereby reducing road accidents across the local government.
Reiterating his stance, the Chairman affirmed that the security and safety of residents of Akoko North East Local Government Area remain non-negotiable.
In attendance were the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Kolade Muftau Folawunmi, members of the Chairman’s cabinet, and the Chairman of Hikom Energy Limited, Colonel F. S. Saka (Rtd.). Deliberations focused on the framework and implementation strategies for the exercise.
