Nigeria’s creative industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, dramatist, filmmaker and scholar, Dr. Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80, bringing to a close a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades and left an indelible mark on the nation’s theatre, film and academic landscape.

‎Widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in Yoruba theatre, Oyewo rose to prominence through his unforgettable portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic stage play, The Gods Are Not to Blame. ‎His masterful interpretation of the tragic king earned him acclaim across Nigeria and beyond, cementing his place among Africa’s most respected thespians.

‎Beyond the stage, the late actor became a household name through memorable roles in film, including his celebrated performance as Oba Lapite in the iconic political satire Saworoide, produced by renowned filmmaker Tunde Kelani.

‎His commanding presence, deep understanding of character and commitment to indigenous storytelling helped shape the golden era of Yoruba cinema and inspired generations of actors and filmmakers.

‎Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, with colleagues and admirers describing Oyewo as a cultural icon, mentor and custodian of Nigerian heritage.

‎Few months before his passing, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had celebrated him as a “national treasure” whose contributions to theatre, film and cultural development would remain a lasting source of inspiration for future generations.

‎Born in Oba-Ile, Osun State, in 1946, Oyewo began his acting journey with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group in 1964 before building an illustrious career that combined artistic excellence with academic distinction. A doctorate holder in Drama, he lectured at several institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University and Elizade University, where he mentored countless students who today occupy prominent positions in the creative industry.

‎As the final curtain falls on the life of Dr. Kola Oyewo, Nigeria bids farewell to a rare talent whose voice, wisdom and performances enriched the nation’s cultural identity.
