Senate Approves ₦50m for Families of Security Personnel, Teachers Killed in Oyo School Rescue
The Senate on Wednesday approved a ₦50 million donation to the families of three security personnel and two teachers who lost their lives during the operation that secured the release of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after 56 days in captivity.
The resolution followed a proposal by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary. Lawmakers unanimously endorsed the intervention, with each of the five bereaved families to receive ₦10 million in recognition of the sacrifices made by the deceased in the line of duty.
Akpabio said the donation was intended to support the dependants of the victims, particularly the children they left behind.
He commended President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for the successful rescue mission, while noting that the operation came at a heavy cost.
The deceased security personnel were identified as Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force. The two teachers who died were identified as Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun.
The donation followed the Senate’s adoption of a motion on Tuesday commending the security agencies for the successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers.
The upper chamber also called on the Federal Government to provide comprehensive medical care and welfare support for Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain, who sustained severe injuries while protecting the abducted children during the operation.
The Senate further urged the Federal Government to sustain intelligence-led security operations, deploy advanced surveillance technology and strengthen measures aimed at preventing future attacks on schools and vulnerable communities across the country.
