18-year-old mother charged with kidnapp in Montreal abduction that set off Amber Alert
Montreal police say the missing child that triggered an Amber Alert has been found “safe and sound.”
Police posted the update early Wednesday morning on X, formerly Twitter.
The baby girl was reported missing around 9:25 a.m. Tuesday from her maternal grandparents’ home in the city’s Lachine district.
The grandparents of the baby girl noticed she was not in her room and that a window was open nearby.
Police arrested the girl’s mother after the pair were found safe just after 2 a.m. Wednesday in an unspecified location in northwestern Montreal.
The mother 18, was formally charged in a Montreal court on Wednesday. She is accused of breaking into a home to commit a kidnapping.
A spokesperson for the Crown, Audrey Roy-Cloutier, said prosecutors are opposed to her release from custody.
The mother’s identity is protected by a publication ban. She was again in court on Thursday.
The child was reported missing Tuesday morning from her maternal grandparents’ home in Lachine.
Quebec’s Crown prosecutor’s office says both parents of a one-year-old girl have been charged with allegedly abducting the child.
Spokesperson Audrey Roy-Cloutier confirmed the 18-year-old mother appeared in court in Montreal on Wednesday and was charged with breaking and entering and abduction.
On Thursday, the prosecutor’s office said the father also will remain detained and his case has been adjourned today Friday.
The child was reported missing at 9:24 a.m. Tuesday morning from the Lachine home of her maternal grandparents, who had custody of her. The grandparents discovered the child was missing from her room and a nearby window had been left open. Montreal police issued an Amber Alert Tuesday afternoon.
Police arrested the mother after she and the infant were found safe just after 2 a.m. Wednesday in St-Laurent borough.
A publication ban prevents the release of any information identifying the child.
