The 2026 Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival Main Committee, chaired by Kebbi State Deputy Governor Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, has lauded Governor Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu for his prompt support in jump-starting preparations for the iconic festival.

Alhaji Sufiyanu Garba Bena, Director General of the festival, made the commendation while addressing journalists shortly after the committee’s meeting on Monday in Birnin Kebbi.

He said the Governor’s backing demonstrates his commitment to promoting tourism and stimulating the state’s economy.

Sufiyanu Bena disclosed that the committee has already reached out to key stakeholders, including the Ministers of Arts, Culture and Tourism, and Livestock Development, with plans to engage about eight ministers in the coming weeks to secure further support for the festival.

He added that with the Governor’s approval, renovation of infrastructure in the fishing village will begin immediately, while preparatory clearance work at the festival site is already in full swing.

Highlighting the positive response from stakeholders, the Director General said all major participants have expressed full willingness to be part of the festival following consultative meetings in Abuja, aimed at ensuring the success of the event.

He also called on journalists to continue projecting Kebbi State positively, noting that despite occasional isolated criminal activities, the state is widely recognised for its peace, hospitality, and tranquillity.
