Blaze engulfs filling station in Dutse after tanker explosion
A fire erupted at a filling station in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, on Thursday evening during the offloading of fuel in Kiyawa Local Government Area, Northwest Nigeria.
The incident, which took place around 8 p.m. at Shakkotu along Kiyawa Road, Dutse, was reportedly triggered when a person answered a phone call near the tanker, igniting flammable vapours.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the flames rapidly engulfed the tanker and part of the filling station.
However, swift intervention by firefighters and local residents helped contain the blaze, preventing further destruction.
Authorities confirmed that no lives were lost, though the extent of property damage is yet to be assessed. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This incident comes on the heels of a series of recent tanker explosions across the country. Last Saturday, at least 11 people lost their lives when a petrol-laden tanker exploded along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The tanker reportedly suffered brake failure, overturned, and spilled its contents, leading to a devastating explosion.
Before that, on January 18, 2025, tragedy struck in Niger State, where no fewer than 86 people were killed and 55 others injured while attempting to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker.
Earlier in January 2025, another explosion in Agbor, Delta State, claimed at least five lives after a petrol tanker lost control and burst into flames.
In October 2024, a fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State resulted in over 170 fatalities, with scores of others sustaining injuries.
