Coalition Partners Committee on Disability Matters to promote Rights of PWD’s in Nigeria

A coalition of civil society organization, PWD’s Potential Unhinged Project, PP- UP has said the Community of Persons With Disabilities is a treasure that has remained largely untapped for long which is disservice and relegation of an estimated 35.1 million population of PWDs due to unhealthy stereotypes.

the director of the coalition stated this while Speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between it’s organisation and the House of representatives committee on disability matters Persons with Disability at the national assembly complex,Abuja.

Mr Ugochukwu Ani Zhyon who noted that the committee on disability matters has a vital and very statutory role to play in mitigating this stereotype by promoting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in Nigeria commended the leadership of the national assembly and committee for addressing the plights of PWD’S

He pointed out that the the MoU covers nationwide medical access support initiative, talent discovery and development project, a reality show showcasing the gifts,the potentials and resilience of the PWDs and an inclusive music concert featuring PWD artists and non-PWD A-list artists.

Director of PP- UP said the partnership aims to promote accessible and inclusive opportunities for PWDs,showcase PWDs’ talents and abilities, challenging stereotypes and promoting social inclusion and foster unity, boost self esteem, and empowerment for PWDs in Nigeria.

According to Mr Ani Zion the “partnership aims to: Promote accessible and inclusive opportunities for PWDs. Showcase PWDs’ talents and abilities, challenging stereotypes and promoting social inclusion, Provide a platform for PWDs to participate in inclusive music and arts events and foster unity, boost self esteem, and empowerment for PWDs in Nigeria”.

“Roles and Responsibilities of implementating organizations
-AFESTAC Media: Lead implementing organisation , providing overall management and coordination.
-OCHOCODIM, and AAP: Providing technical assistance, guidance, and advocacy for policy changes and legislation.
-AGPFI: Providing financial and technical support, contributing expertise and resources”.

“Budget and Resource Allocation
The total budget for each project is outlined, with breakdowns for talent selection, personnel, infrastructure, medical outreach, advocacy, and miscellaneous costs”.

“Term and Termination:
The agreement commences on February 25, 2024, and continues until February 25, 2027. Either party can terminate the agreement with 90 days’ written notice.
Representations and Warranties
All parties represent that they are fully authorized to enter into the agreement, and their performance and obligations will not violate any third-party rights or agreements”.

“Indemnity and Limitation of Liability
The parties agree to indemnify and hold harmless each other against claims, losses, and damages. Neither party shall be liable for damages not directly resulting from their negligence or breach”.

“Governing Law and Jurisdiction
The agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Now we all as citizens of Nigeria should geyvinvovled in the journy as none os really immuned to disability in everu sense of reality”.

While responding, the chairman house of representatives committee on disability, Hon Bashir Dawodu who commended the initiative and objectives of the partnership called for tax exemption for Persons With Disabilities, saying such class of Nigerians should not be allowed to pay tax.

Implementing Organisations of the PWD’S Potential Unhinged Project, PP-UP include Afestac Media, Advocates for Global Peace Forum International, OCHOCODIM, Association of Accessibility Professionals.
