Ex-Army Officer, Col. Saka proffers solutions to security challenges
Disturbed by the increasing rate of insecurity in Nigeria, a retired Military Officer, Colonel F.S Saka has advised the nation’s security agencies to adopt use of modern technology to tackle kidnap cases ravaging the entire country, saying information is more important than weapon.
Col. Saka Rtd added that with the availability of modern information and communication technology instruments, criminal elements will not have any hidden space.
The retired Military Officer stated this in an interview with Ebony Herald International Magazine in Abuja.
According to him, “it is so worrisome that kidnappers are bold enough to call their victims family to demand for ransom and get away with it.
He queried the job of officers in Information technology units and that what is the importance of our service providers that these criminals can not be tracked and know the location where they are making calls.
“With the advance technology, the police and other security agencies should be able to monitor our environment properly with the aid of drone.
Col. Saka (rtd) who welcomed the call for the establishment of State Police that has passed the second reading at the National assembly, praised the initiatives of the Southwest Governors for the introduction of Amotekun security network and also commended its personnel, saying they could still do better.
The retired Army officer further called for the establishment of the neighbourhood watch believing that information is more than weapon.
He suggested that neighborhood watch would include the followings: Engagement of 100 able bodied personnel as volunteers per local government to increase the chances of nipping insecurity in the bud.
“Registration of all the domestic staff of each household in each local government domiciled in a server.
Creation of a database for each Local government for enrolment of new tenants and domestic workers into the community.
He added that the establishment of neighborhood watch would reduce the rate of killing and insurgencies in our community.
The scheme will allow individuals to conduct their businesses peacefully thereby leading to improved economic productivities.
He called for the involvements of all the retired security personnel in each Community neighborhood watch to play advisory roles.
Col Saka advised that all our Security Guards, House girls and nannies must be profile before allowing them into our apartments.
“How could you just bring in a total stranger into your house without the involvement of the security agencies?, he wondered.
He advised that the federal and state Ministries of works should clear all our roadsides and use the cleared portions for planting of food crops like cowpeas or groundnut instead of allowing bush and trees that serves as cover for criminals.
Finally, “I want to call for daily monitoring of activities in our Hotels and joints and enjoin them to reduce activities of drug peddlers who are agents of armed robbers and kidnappers.
“Governments should support the Rapid Response team by providing them with the required work tools to make them more active and effective”, he stated.
