The issue of resource ownership control has been brought to the front burner by the President of the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri, who said is better for the owners of resource to take charge of their resources rather than someone else.

Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri stated this while speaking with newsmen during the House of Representatives Committee on the Review Of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

According to him, irrespective of the numerous daunting challenges confronting the Ijaws, there are some issues that required emphasis, such as resource ownership control, internal security in the communities and power to safeguard the environment against external aggression.

The youth leader wondered why people who had fed from the resources gotten from the Ijaw land suddenly became a menace to the people and environment.

He also added the issue of state creation, his words “Ijaw people through this process expected the creation of new states western flank Toru-Ebe while eastern flank are both Oil River State and Atlantic Ocean City State this are states if created will be able to pull Ijaw people together along coastal lines so that people can leave contiguously as designed by God.

The astute youth leader further said that he’s hopeful the constitution review will be successful, however prayed it doesn’t turn down just as it has been in the past.

His words ” We are hopeful that this will not go down like every other constitutional amendment process but this we will be able to make progress for the good of our nation.

He further called on the members of the committee not to geopardice the process but to stand tall and bring to pass the aspirations of many Nigerians for a better country.
