JAGABAN: THIS IS YOUR CHANCE. By Mohammed Kabir ILYASU

The last 63 years of Nigeria’s post colonial period was notable for political upheavals exacerbated by Military coups that brought the civil war and acts of armed robberies, insurgencies, terrorism and banditry. It was also the period we witnessed the creation of states from 12 to 36 including the FCT Abuja in an effort to bring governance closer to people. While some states are viable, many still live on Federal allocation to survive or risk administrative collapse.

I would situate my treatise as a Golden Chance for Jagaban, because there is nothing else again Nigeria would go through to test her resilience as one United country. All political discussion begin on cautious note of hope for Nigeria’s future, but this hope is bounded by the reality that institutional corruption and a combination of religious and factionalism is endemic and pervasive. The quality of Nigeria’s governance was already poor. Left unchecked, it can ultimately corrode and lead to anarchy.

Congratulations to Jagaban is in order because it speaks of his understanding and courage to political wizardry. if there is any living Nigerian who aspires for the coveted seat of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the sitting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fits the prescription. The idea therefore of thinking more about what he should not do, rather than what he should is one that can be applied to others as well. Because in the field of diversity and inclusiveness, for example, taking the active decision to not exclude any disadvantaged group and ensuring people do not feel socially or culturally excluded might have more impact.

To quote Fredrick Douglass, “where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe”.

I sincerely hope given the experience in governance and business acumen, Jagaban will prove that his government is inclusive and no group is left with a void that in spite of their tergiversation, will make us deeply uncomfortable to warrant his service obstinate and passive. People may be reaching out to unpleasantness to fill a gap in order to regulate emotions.

Among other things, your election affords you the chance and the opportunity for constructive engagement between the various groups, the state and the civil populace. It is in this regard that we must appreciate and support efforts towards civility by promoting social cohesion in the interest of national unity and social security.

Political differences have troubled our politics and communities as in many other parts of the world. But our awareness can and must be expanded beyond existing limitations, as we develop greater sense of belonging to one family not only of humankind, but as Nigerians.
The ongoing social crisis in the South East can not be allowed to continue as human lives and properties are being wasted. Indeed, there exist some section in that community that are not prepared to engage in dialogue or accept responsibility for political and social crisis generated within their own traditions. But we shouldn’t lose sight of some members or leaders who cherish the opportunity and who are prepared to collaboratively work towards a more enlightened and peaceful future. This is a great opportunity to display statesmanship. I believe you have seen it all and you are ready to demonstrate to Nigerians that they have elected time tested democrat who is ever ready to engage discordant groups in the service of effectual government.
