LASWA, Pi-CNG push for greener Lagos waterways with CNG-powered Ferries
In a bid to accelerate Nigeria’s clean energy transition, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), has convened a high-level engagement with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), RIL Hydro Kraft Limited, promoters of marine CNG solutions, key boat operators, and other marine stakeholders across Lagos.
The strategic meeting, held at LASWA’s headquarters in Ikoyi, marked a major step towards adopting compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative energy source for ferries and other inland watercraft operating in the state.
Organised at LASWA’s instance, the session aimed to align Nigeria’s national clean energy goals with the operational realities of local boat operators, while exploring the feasibility of integrating CNG technology into the state’s growing marine transport sector.
It also served as a platform to encourage collaboration among stakeholders for a seamless energy transition on Lagos waterways.
In his welcome remarks, LASWA General Manager, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, underscored the strategic value of introducing CNG-powered boats and electric ferries, describing the initiative as part of the agency’s long-term commitment to reducing carbon emissions, improving passenger safety, and cutting operational costs for boat operators.
He noted that waterways are vital to Lagos’ future mobility plans, and that energy transition remains a central pillar of that vision.
Leading the federal delegation, Pi-CNG’s Project Director/CEO, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, provided a detailed overview of the federal government’s roadmap for expanding CNG adoption across all transportation sectors, including marine.
He cited recent successes recorded in the road transport sector and assured marine stakeholders of strong technical backing and enabling policies to support the shift.
Also speaking at the event, the CEO of RIL Hydro Kraft Limited, Mr Layi Solesi, delivered a comprehensive technical presentation on marine CNG conversion, fueling infrastructure, safety protocols, and the long-term economic advantages of CNG usage.
He referenced successful case studies from coastal cities and affirmed the company’s readiness to collaborate with LASWA and local boat operators on pilot projects.
During the interactive session, boat operators raised pertinent concerns over issues such as affordability, engine compatibility, safety, fueling infrastructure, and long-term maintenance.
In response, representatives of LASWA and the federal initiative assured them of a phased and inclusive implementation approach, backed by extensive capacity-building and stakeholder engagement throughout the process.
The landmark meeting reaffirms LASWA’s leadership role in championing sustainable innovations within the water transport sector.
Participants expressed optimism and strong commitment to supporting the push for a cleaner, greener, and more efficient future on Lagos waterways through CNG-powered transport solutions.
