Mystery deepens as Lagos police probe death of ex-SDP guber candidate, Bamidele Akingboye
The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into the mysterious death of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, a former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State, amid growing controversy.
Operatives were said to have stormed Akingboye’s Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence after a disturbing photograph of his remains, with visible bruises on the head, went viral on social media, sparking doubts over the true cause of his death.
Although initial reports indicated that the politician died peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the graphic image has raised suspicions of foul play.
Fuel was added to the controversy when an overseas-based social critic, Olujimi Lijoka, alleged in a viral video that ₦210 million was suspiciously withdrawn from Akingboye’s account within hours of his death.
According to him, ₦205 million was traced to three separate accounts.
“I am not a court, but this is deeply suspicious.
“We cannot fold our arms. I call on Ikale sons and daughters to rise and demand justice for Otunba,” Lijoka said.
Family sources hinted that the late politician, fondly called OBA, might have sustained the injuries during a heated argument in his home which allegedly turned violent.
Unconfirmed reports suggest he was pushed, fell, and hit his head on the tiled floor before being rushed to hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
Although there are reports of some arrests, the Lagos Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the case as of press time.
Akingboye, until his death, was a prominent businessman, philanthropist, and influential political figure in Ondo State.
He contested the November 2024 governorship election but lost to the incumbent, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He and his party rejected the results, citing widespread irregularities.
His sudden demise has thrown Ondo’s political circles into mourning and heightened calls for transparency in the ongoing investigation.
