Onion farmers, traders laud Tinubu for reopening Tsamiya border
Stakeholders in the agricultural and trade sectors have commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the re-opening of the Tsamiya Border in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
They described the move as a major boost to economic growth, food security and human development.
In a letter of appreciation addressed to the President, the National President of the National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) and President of the Regional Observatory of Onion in West and Central Africa, Alhaji Aliyu Maitasamu Isah, said the decision reflected the administration’s unwavering commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to him, the reopening of the border has already begun to restore legitimate cross-border trade, particularly in agricultural commodities such as onions, grains, pepper and livestock, thereby revitalising economic activities in Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States.
He noted that the border serves as a vital gateway to regional markets, supporting thousands of farmers, traders, transporters and small-scale entrepreneurs across the affected states.
“The President’s timely intervention has revived agricultural value chains, reduced post-harvest losses, improved household incomes and strengthened local economies across border communities,” Isah said.
Beyond the economic benefits, he stressed that the development has restored hope, dignity and social stability to border communities, as families return to productive livelihoods and youths re-engage in lawful economic activities.
He added that the decision had contributed significantly to poverty reduction, youth empowerment and improved community resilience.
Isah further described the move as a strategic step towards strengthening national security, noting that regulated trade discourages illegal routes and enhances intelligence cooperation between border communities and security agencies.
“The deployment of appropriate security and regulatory agencies alongside the reopening of the border shows a deep understanding that regulated trade enhances security more than prolonged closure,” he stated.
He said the people of Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States view the decision as a testament to a responsive, people-centred government, reinforcing confidence in the Federal Government and Nigeria’s leadership role in regional integration.
The NOPPMAN president also commended Tinubu’s broader development initiatives, including the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, ongoing infrastructure projects in Sokoto State and the removal of fuel subsidy, describing them as bold and decisive steps toward national economic renewal.
He concluded by praying for divine guidance, protection and wisdom for the President as he leads the nation towards sustainable development and shared prosperity.
