In a significant move to further bolster the infrastructure development initiatives within the Nigerian aviation sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recently forwarded a letter to the Nigerian Senate seeking approval for the federal government’s acquisition of two state airports and a substantial refund totaling N24.6 billion to the respective states involved.

The President’s letter, which was formally introduced on the Senate floor by the illustrious President of the Senate, Godswil Akpabio, during a session held on Wednesday, delineates the proposal for a promissory note to be issued to facilitate the reimbursement of N9.5 billion to the Lafia Cargo Airport in Nasarawa State and N15.1 billion to the Kebbi State International Airport.

The acquisition and proposed refunds come as part of the federal government’s strategic plan to enhance the operational efficiency and technological capabilities of domestic airports across the country. The decision to undertake the acquisition of the two airports, which was initially approved by the previous administration in July 2022, encompasses the Lafia Cargo Airport in Nasarawa State and the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Birnin-Kebbi.

Upon the presentation of President Tinubu’s request to the Senate, the legislative body judiciously referred the matter to its esteemed committee on Local and Foreign Debts for a meticulous review and comprehensive analysis. This prudent decision reinforces the Senate’s commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective governance practices in all matters pertaining to national development and financial obligations.

The committee is expected to undertake a thorough assessment of the proposed refunds and state airport acquisitions, leveraging its expertise and knowledge to compile a detailed report for submission to the Senate. This meticulous review process underscores the Senate’s dedication to upholding the highest standards of legislative oversight and due diligence in the management of public funds and infrastructure projects.

As Nigeria continues to advance its aviation infrastructure and create conducive environments for economic growth and development, the proposed acquisition and refunds represent a pivotal step towards enhancing the operational capabilities and connectivity of domestic airports. President Tinubu’s proactive approach in seeking Senate approval for this critical initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable infrastructure development and ensuring the efficient management of state resources for the collective benefit of all Nigerians.
