Tinubu Sends Ambassadorial Nominees to Senate, Mrs. Ajimobi, Omokri, Sulu Gambari, Serving Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Makes List

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a fresh list of 32 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation — a development that has drawn attention, particularly with the inclusion of serving senator and businessman, Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South.

This second batch of nominees, conveyed in two separate letters to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, includes 15 career diplomats and 17 non-career nominees, expanding the administration’s ongoing reconstitution of Nigeria’s foreign missions. It comes days after the President submitted the first set of three nominees.

Senator Ibrahim, a lawyer, entrepreneur and current member of the Upper Chamber, is among the high-profile figures nominated as non-career ambassadors. His nomination signals what observers describe as Tinubu’s strategy to deploy experienced political actors to key international posts as Nigeria seeks to strengthen global partnerships.

Other notable names on the non-career list include former presidential aide Reno Omokri, former INEC chairman Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, former Enugu governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, ex–Lagos deputy governor Femi Pedro, and former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode.

The list also features several former first ladies, commissioners, and lawmakers, including Erelu Angela Adebayo (Ekiti), Fatima Florence Ajimobi (Oyo), and Grace Bent (Adamawa).

The career ambassador nominees include Enebechi Monica Okwuchukwu (Abia), Yakubu Nyaku Danladi (Taraba), Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim (Ogun), Yvonne Ehinosen Odumah (Edo), Ambassador Ahmed Mohammed Monguno (Borno), and Ambassador Olatunji Ahmed Sulu Gambari (Kwara), among others.

According to the Presidency, the envoys will be posted to countries with which Nigeria maintains strong strategic relations — including China, India, Canada, the UAE, South Africa — as well as multilateral missions such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the African Union. Postings will be assigned after Senate confirmation.

Last week, President Tinubu submitted an earlier set of nominees — Ambassador Ayodele Oke (Oyo), Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu (Jigawa), and retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are (Ogun) — expected to be deployed to the United States, United Kingdom, or France.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced that more ambassadorial nominations are expected in the coming weeks as the administration moves to fully constitute Nigeria’s diplomatic representations worldwide.
