…Says Efforts Underway To Upgrade Asoama Sports Academy.
The Bayelsa Government on Monday said it has earmarked the Polaku-Sabagreia Road project as part of its next set of big ticket projects to be executed to further open up the state for commerce, tourism and other socio-economic activities.
The state Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, disclosed this at the consultative meeting with community Leaders and political stakeholders of Kolokuma/Opokuma Constituencies 1 and 2 at his office in Government House, Yenagoa.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, the Deputy Governor stressed that efforts were on top gear to ensure the take-off of the project, which was long-abandoned by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Senator Ewhrudjakpo, while thanking the people of the two Constituencies for their abiding support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged them to continually rally round the Governor Douye Diri-led administration, which he described as their own government
He explained that the present administration decided to take over the Polaku-Sabagreia Road Project from NDDC because of its socio-economic importance.
Consequently, the Deputy Governor called on communities in the area including Polaku in Gbarain Clan to complement government efforts towards the seamless commencement and completion of the project in record time.
His words: “The state government is already doing something about that Polaku-Sabagreia Road project. I hope you know that government has already taken over that project from the NDDC.
“We are very conscious of our responsibility to our people. As I said earlier, government has not exhausted its big ticket projects. So, I’m very sure you will soon see us commence work on that project.
“We know the importance of that road. So, all we need is your support as stakeholders, particularly support from our communities to ensure a seamless take-off and completion of the project.”
Responding to a request by the state Secretary of PDP, Mr Gesiye Isowo, Senator Ewhrudjakpo, said government was poised to put the requisite infrastructure and manpower in place to upgrade the Sports Academy, Asoama, into a full-blown degree awarding institution.
To this end, he assured that government would work towards fulfilling the accreditation requirements of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to enable the Academy introduce national diploma programmes for a start.
Speaking earlier, the state Secretary of PDP, Mr Gesiye Isowo, underscored the importance of the Polaku-Sabagreia Bridge project, noting that when completed, it would not only link Yenagoa and Kolokuma/Opokuma Communities but also reduce travel time.
In their separate submissions, the Community Development Committee Chairman of Kaiama, Mr Dimie Berezi and Chief Rhodesia Whyte, appealed for government’s urgent attention to stop the raging erosion from completely washing away St Mark’s Cathedral, Kaiama and Sounbiri Community in Odi.
Some critical stakeholders who made contributions at the meeting, included state lawmakers from the area, Rt Hon. Tonye Isenah and Hon. Wisdom Fafi, as well as the Commissioner for Environment, Chief Iselema Gbaranbiri
Others were the Chairman, PDP Caucus in Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA, Chief Isaac Kumokou, the Governor’s Special Representative in the area, Mr Okpoebi Agbozu and the Chairman, Bayelsa State Project Monitoring Committee, Hon. Ebiye Tarabina, among others.
