Wike Under Fire: APC Groups Call for Minister’s Removal
Tensions within Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have reached a boiling point as two influential groups, the APC Leaders Forum (ALF) and the Tinubu/Shettima Solidarity Movement (TSSM), are calling for the ouster of Minister Nyesom Wike, citing “insubordination, anti-party activities, and threats to national unity.”
The coalition’s ultimatum was delivered to President Bola Tinubu via an open letter dated January 7, 2026, accusing Wike of orchestrating a campaign of destabilization against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and undermining the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru.
Wike’s alleged comments, including a warning that those “meddling” in Rivers State affairs would “get their fingers burnt,” have been deemed a direct affront to the APC National Working Committee.
The groups claim Wike’s actions are a blatant attempt to sabotage the party’s chances in the state.
The minister’s ongoing feud with Governor Fubara has created a rift within the party, with the coalition questioning the wisdom of retaining a minister who openly opposes his own party’s governor.
“How can we trust a man who actively works against our own governor while enjoying the privileges of your administration?” they asked.
The controversy has also raised concerns about national security, with Wike’s alleged claim that “nobody can enter Rivers State” seen as a challenge to President Tinubu’s authority.
The groups have vowed to escalate their protests nationwide until Wike is removed, insisting that “no individual is above the party or the country.”
The demand has sparked intense debate within the APC, with some calling for Wike’s immediate removal, while others rally behind him. As the party grapples with internal strife, the outcome remains uncertain.
