2026 Democracy Day: Tinubu Committed to Inclusive Nigeria, Says Information Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
He made the statement within the week in Abuja during a press conference, marking activities for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Idris noted that this year’s Democracy Day is significant because it falls on the third anniversary of the Renewed Hope Administration. According to him, the period offers Nigerians a chance to assess national progress, review ongoing reforms, and renew commitment to unity and development.
The minister described Democracy Day as a key moment for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey. He said it is also an opportunity to celebrate the resilience of democratic institutions and honour citizens who fought for democratic governance.
Idris paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other democracy heroes whose sacrifices secured the freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. He also acknowledged President Tinubu and other pro-democracy activists who played pivotal roles in restoring and consolidating democracy.
The minister described Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule as a major national achievement. He said the milestone reflects the resilience, determination and democratic aspirations of the Nigerian people.
According to Idris, the Tinubu administration remains focused on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting national unity, expanding economic opportunities and delivering sustainable development. He said these goals are being pursued through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He explained that the press conference was organized to brief Nigerians and the international community on the administration’s journey over the past three years. The briefing covered key milestones, challenges, and the vision guiding government policies and programmes.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, represented President Tinubu at the event. Akume, who chairs the Interministerial Committee for Democracy Day 2026, also described 27 years of continuous democracy as proof of the resilience of Nigerians and their institutions.
Senator Akume stated that the administration’s tough policy decisions, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms, were necessary. He said the reforms have created fiscal space for investment in infrastructure, education, healthcare, social interventions and economic development, and that citizens will feel more benefits as revenues improve.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev; Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari; Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala; as well as permanent secretaries and heads of agencies.
