The Catholic Bishop of Osogbo Diocese Most Revered Dr John Akin Oyejola caution political leaders not to allow innocent Nigerians to suffer from the effect of removal of Subsidy which was reportedly caused by selected few rich individuals
The Bishop who said 5 billion Naira Palliatives allocated to States will not cushion the effects as many Nigerian can hardly have a one square meal in a day hinted that the only panacea for peace is for leaders to be sincere and allowed justice prevailed in the land .
The chief Shephard of Osogbo Diocese believed that only true Justice ,fairness and truthfulness are the yardstick for peace and development.
He spoke while admonishing the church worshippers of St Benedict Catholic Cathedral during a Holy Mass Thanksgiving he celebrated .
“Why is poor and Innocent Nigerians paying for the effect of Subsidy which few individuals caused?it is only justice that will be peace and development to our land
” I encourage and enjoined you all not to be discourage from what is presently happening as God is still in control. I know by the Grace of God Nigeria will be a great country. We must all continued to pray trusting God that all will be well in this country “, he stated .
On the issued of 5billion Palliatives allocated to States ,the Clergyman said it is unfortunate that evil committed by few individual is now being paid by innocent Nigerians who can hardly feed their families since the Subsidy was removed.
“How long will 5billion Naira to States goes .I saw what a particular state was distributed to their
People,I wonder how long such small bag of rice will go for a family in this currently situation .
“Our leaders are buying exotic cars going out with array of vehicles in their entourage ,their children living in better houses .They cannot be peace without justice. Husband be just to your wife and children because that is only way peace ,progress and development can be assured
“God will build a good ,prosperous Nigeria for us .We must be hopeful and not to lose hope .let continued praying for justice and peace “, Oyejola Stated .
Recalled that Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province, comprising Ibadan Archdiocese, Ilorin, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti and Osogbo Dioceses, had on Thursday. lamented worsening economic hardship in the country and expressed annoyance over failure of the political leaders to better living conditions of the citizens.
The clerics also bemoaned insecurity pervading the land, intractable food insecurity, exodus of youths and brain drain, saying, “It is distressing that Nigerian leaders, past and present, continue to exact more sacrifice from ordinary Nigerians while increasing their own scandalous remunerations and comfort.”
This was contained in a communiqué entitled “Overcoming The Hard Times in Nigeria,” issued after the meeting of the bishops at Pope John Paul II Pastoral Centre, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, from August 16 to 17, 2023, the bishops, having prayerfully deliberated on issues of Church and national interest at their second meeting for the year, declared that, “All Nigerian leaders stand indicted unless they make a change, shun prebendalism and serve the aspirations of their people.
The communiqué, signed by the President of the Province, Most Rev Gabriel Abegunrin and the Secretary, Most Rev John Oyejola.
“All over the country insecurity remains an emergency of serious concern. Whether in the form of kidnapping, banditry, insurgency or ritual killing, Nigerians feel increasingly hemmed in, in their own country. Regular news of brutality and killing from the security agencies who should protect the people only intensifies the siege context in which daily life continues. Government must show greater seriousness in tackling these challenges head on. Recent news of the ambush and killing of 21 Nigerian soldiers by suspected bandits.”
