Exit of an icon: Madam Flora Adejoke George Onile-Ere passes on at 97 years. By Lai Gidado

The family of George and Onile-Ere has announced the glorious transition of their icon, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother, and Aunt, Mrs Flora Modupe Adejoke George Onile-Ere, who passed away at the grand age of 97 years.

According to a statement released by the deceased’s family, it said Mama died in her Lagos residence on the 17th of September 2023.

Born on the 21st of April 1926 in Abeokuta, Agbole Ntoowa, in Kenta Okebode, to Pa Joseph Olumuyiwa George and Mrs. Rachel Adenike George, she was the fourth of her mother’s five children and being a proud child of the British Empire, she never failed to remind her children when her birthday came up that she shared the same birthday with Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The statement further stated, that Mama attended St John’s Primary School Igbehin in Abeokuta and she completed her primary school education at Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School, Lagos.

“Subsequently, she attended Oriel Girls’ Secondary School. At the end of her secondary school, she met her first love, Elder Bolaji Kole.

“She joined the Nigeria Customs and Excise circa 1952, worked at the Lagos Ports for several years. Afterwards she went to the Lagos School of Radiography and after graduation, she worked for many years with Mobil Oil in their Radiography department in Kakawa Lagos.

“She met and married Prince Jacob Olawale Onile-Ere and together they proceeded to England, UK in 1962. Whilst there, she trained at the world-renowned Harris London College of Hairdressing between 1962 and 1964. On her return to Nigeria, she opened a beauty and hairdressing salon on Broad Street Lagos.

“She was the owner of the prestigious Florentina Hairdressing and Beauty Salon at Excelsior Hotel, Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria. She went into business, trading in fabrics, jewellery, shoes and bags, and gift items cum ornaments. She loves travelling, some of the countries she visited for business includes; Spain, Italy, Beirut and England among others for many years.

“Mama was blessed with children, Mrs Abimbola Gladys Kole Johnson, Mrs Bolawale Olatokunbo Onile-Ere Adekunle, and Mrs Olagbende Kolawale Onile-Ere Yeates, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a much-loved Aunt and stepmother.

“She was a phenomenal person and loved by many. Throughout her life, she touched many lives with her generosity and compassion.

She was a fashion icon well into her advanced years, known for her unique style and dress sense and a great cook.

“Above all, she was a devoted Christian and a powerful prayer warrior. Born a Methodist, she was a prominent member of the United African Methodist Church Oke Arin, Lagos for many years and later on a Mother-in-Israel and the Iya Ijo General of the Holy Michael Church of the Lord worldwide.

“She was a member of several Pentecostal churches and a great evangelist for the Kingdom of God.

Madam FM George, as you were fondly called, we join the hosts of heaven and humanity in celebrating not only your life, but your glorious exit.

We love you, we will miss you dearly (it’s so hard to believe you are gone), but God loves you more!

Sleep in the bosom of the Lord, till we meet to part no more, Amen!!!
