Reacting to the British election
German Chancellor Scholz ‘convinced’ Starmer will be a ‘very good’ PM
Olaf Scholz has also congratulated Labour for its election victory and expressed the opinion that its leader will be a “very good” prime minister for the UK.

“I know Keir Starmer personally, we have often spoken and met,” he said.

“He will be a very good, very successful prime minister. I am convinced about that,” Scholz added.

The Labour leader will now accept the request of King Charles III to form a government after his party’s landslide victory.

In a ceremony known as the “kissing of hands”, Starmer will officially become prime minister and then head to his official residence at Number 10 Downing Street.

The incoming Prime Minister Keir Starmer has arrived at Buckingham Palace, where King Charles III will ask him to form a government and make him prime minister of the UK.

Labour’s climate policies to make UK a global leader, climate officials say
Officials working in the area of climate change say they are hopeful for a change in Britain’s policies on the issue after the Labour win.

“The new government’s policies for climate change will return the UK to a position of global leadership,” said Lord Adair Turner of Ecchinswell, the UK’s chairman of the Energy Transitions Commission.

Laurie Bristow, the former UK ambassador to Afghanistan and Russia and former regional ambassador for COP26, the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, said: “COP29, taking place in Azerbaijan later this year, offers an opportunity for the incoming government to set a clear agenda for the UK and to show leadership on the international stage.”

Meanwhile, Laurence Tubiana, an architect of the Paris Agreement and CEO of the European Climate Foundation, called Labour’s climate policies “ambitious”.

“By electing a party with an ambitious climate programme, voters in the UK have shown that they believe the transition to net zero is an opportunity for economic growth and a prerequisite for tackling the defining challenges that the UK and the rest of Europe face,” Tubiana said.

“They have emphatically rejected the outgoing government’s attempts to turn climate policy into a new front in the culture wars. This is a historic opportunity for the UK to reclaim a leadership role in the global fight against climate change.”
