The Nigerian Senate has resolved to investigate the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project, spanning from 1999 to date, amid allegations of corruption and neglect. An ad-hoc committee has been established to scrutinize the transactions, following a motion moved by Senator Manu Haruna (Taraba Central).

The lawmakers expressed concern over the project’s failure to commence, despite its potential to generate 3050 megawatts, which would significantly improve Nigeria’s power supply. Some senators described the project as “non-existent” and “dubious,” suggesting that funds allocated for the project may have been mismanaged or embezzled.

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, lamented the country’s hardship due to lack of power supply, stating that the situation has plunged Nigeria into further hardship. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the project’s stagnation.

The Senate directed its committees on Finance, Power, Water Resources, and Appropriation to investigate the circumstances surrounding the project and report back within four weeks. The move aims to address the challenges plaguing the project, ensure accountability, and guarantee its completion.

The investigation is expected to uncover the reasons behind the project’s delay, alleged corruption, and mismanagement of funds. The Senate’s move is seen as a step towards addressing Nigeria’s chronic power supply challenges and promoting transparency and accountability in government projects.
