2 policemen killed, others injured in Shi’ite group attack
A violent attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly referred to as the ‘Shi’ite’ group, has left two police officers dead and three others unconscious in Wuse, Abuja.
The attack, which took place at a police checkpoint near the traffic light at Wuse Junction, also saw three police patrol vehicles set ablaze.
According to a statement issued by SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, FCT, Abuja, described the assault as entirely unprovoked.
Members of the Shi’ite group reportedly armed themselves with machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices, locally made bombs in bottles filled with kerosene, as they launched their attack on the unsuspecting officers.
In response to the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the attack in the strongest terms, pledging to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The Commissioner confirmed that several arrests have already been made in connection with the assault.
The situation has since been brought under control, with normalcy restored to the affected area.
The FCT Police Command assures the public that further developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
