The Nigerian Senate has recently put forth a proposal to revamp the abandoned Shell Airstrip at Oloibiri oil well one, located in Bayelsa, with the intention to transform it into a modern Air Force Base. This decision came after Senator Benson Agadaga, representing Bayelsa East, highlighted the dire need to utilize the vacant land and breathe new life into the area.

The Shell Airstrip, which was established in 1958 covering more than 25 hectares of land, was built following the discovery of crude oil in 1956. Over time, as Shell gradually reduced its operations in the area and eventually departed from the Oloibiri oil field, the airstrip was left abandoned, leading to a state of desolation in the region.

During discussions in the Senate, lawmakers expressed their concerns about the neglect of the airstrip and its surroundings, emphasizing the importance of redeveloping the land to create a valuable asset for the community. The proposal to upgrade the abandoned airstrip into an Air Force Base was seen as a significant step toward revitalizing the area and fostering economic growth in Bayelsa.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio echoed the sentiments of the senators, acknowledging the potential of the project to bring renewed hope and opportunities to the people living in the region. In addition, the Senate passed a resolution calling upon oil companies operating in Nigeria to contribute towards the funding needed to transform the airstrip into a functional Air Force Base.

The move to upgrade the Oloibiri Airstrip aligns with the Senate’s commitment to promoting development and prosperity in Bayelsa. By repurposing the abandoned land into a strategic military facility, the government aims to not only enhance security but also create new avenues for employment and investment in the region.

Overall, the Senate’s proposal signifies a promising future for the Oloibiri area, offering a beacon of hope for the community and paving the way for sustainable development in Bayelsa.
