Dear Mr. President,

Abeni Aso-Oke

Subject: Catalyzing Change: A Bold Step Towards Resolving Nigeria’s Power Sector Quagmire

I hope this letter finds you amidst a moment of reflection, for today, I bring forth a matter that demands your utmost attention—the tumultuous state of Nigeria’s power sector. As the flickering lights across our nation cast shadows of uncertainty, it’s evident that we stand at a crossroads, beckoning us to chart a new course towards a brighter future.

Abeni Aso-Oke

With only 45% of our populace tethered to the energy grid, and a meager four hours of daily power supply illuminating the lives of millions, the darkness of our power crisis looms large over our aspirations for progress. Our agricultural, industrial, and mining sectors, once poised for growth, now wither under the strain of unreliable power supply, shackling our nation’s economic potential.

Yet, amidst this darkness, there flickers a glimmer of hope—a beacon of opportunity beckoning us towards a new dawn. Since 2005, we’ve witnessed valiant attempts at reform, yet the fruits of these labors have been sparse. Despite boasting a theoretical capacity exceeding 10,000 megawatts, we remain ensnared in a web of inefficiency, with a staggering 96% of industrial energy consumption derived from private generators.

The call for the ousting of our Minister of Power reverberates across the land—a cry born of frustration and disillusionment. Yet, I urge you, Mr. President, to eschew the allure of scapegoating and embrace the mantle of leadership with fervor and resolve. The path to redemption lies not in the removal of individuals but in the collective pursuit of a bold vision—one that transcends the confines of political expediency and embraces the call of duty.

Our challenges are manifold—a Gordian knot entwined with inadequate generation capacity, antiquated transmission networks, and a perilous reliance on petroleum. Yet, within this labyrinth of despair lies the seed of opportunity—a chance to redefine our trajectory and forge a path towards sustainable prosperity.

Let us embark upon a journey of renewal—a journey marked by comprehensive reforms, unwavering commitment to diversification, and a steadfast resolve to bolster our infrastructure. Let us engage stakeholders with humility and purpose, recognizing that true progress arises from the crucible of collaboration.

Mr. President, the time for complacency has passed. As the custodian of our nation’s destiny, I implore you to seize this moment and usher in an era of transformation. Let us cast aside the shackles of apathy and embrace the audacity of hope—for within our grasp lies the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

In closing, know that I stand ready to lend my voice and my vigor to this noble cause. Together, let us illuminate the path towards a future where every Nigerian can bask in the radiance of opportunity and prosperity.

Yours sincerely,

Chidi Ekeh
