Bayelsa Deputy Governor Slumps, Dies At 60, As PDP Mourns Him.
Upon receiving the news of the death of Senator Lawrence Ewrudjakpo, Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Yesterday the state was thrown in to mourning.
Ewrudjakpo, 60 years old slumped in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa where he was confirmed dead.
An official of the hospital who pleaded anonymity confirmed that the Deputy Governor was rushed into the intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.
The Deputy Governor’s aide, Mr Doubara Atasi, confirmed that his principal slumped and was taken to hospital.
Ewrudjakpo, died at the ICU at the FMC after several efforts to resuscitate him proved abortive.
No official statement has been released regarding the cause of the death, but sources suggest it may be related to a cardiac emergency.
The deceased a close political ally of former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson was first appointed by Dickson as Commissioner for Works for eight years.
It was also through the influence of Dickson that Ewrudjakpo was made the deputy governor of the state.
Hours later, the Peoples Democratic Party, on whose platform he was elected, announced his passing. In a statement, PDP spokesperson Ini Ememobong said the party received “with deep shock” the news of his death.
“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received with deep shock the news of the passing of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State and a trusted, faithful party man, His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly collapsed and died earlier today,” the statement reads.
“This devastating news has left the National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and indeed the entire membership of our great party, especially our faithful members in Bayelsa State, in profound grief.
“While alive, Senator Ewhrudjakpo was an honest and consistent politician who believed in and practised politics with principle.
