The directive was contained in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, who said all vehicular and pedestrian movement would be prohibited during the period as part of measures to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.

According to the command, the restriction is one of several security measures put in place in collaboration with other security agencies to protect voters, electoral officials, sensitive materials and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The police, however, said the restriction would not apply to election officials, accredited observers, duly accredited media personnel, security agencies, emergency responders and other essential service providers on election duty.

The statement read in part: “The restriction is part of the comprehensive security measures put in place by the Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, to guarantee a peaceful electoral process, protect voters, electoral officials and sensitive materials, as well as prevent any breakdown of law and order.”

It added that security personnel had been strategically deployed across the state’s 18 local government areas to enforce the directive and maintain public order.

The command warned that anyone found violating the restriction or engaging in acts capable of disrupting the electoral process would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, reassured residents that adequate security arrangements had been made to safeguard the election and urged eligible voters to conduct themselves peacefully while exercising their civic rights in line with the guidelines of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, peaceful and credible local government election.
