End Impunity, protect Journalists’ lives, ABJFN charges govts
The Association of Bloggers and Journalists Against Fake News (ABJFN) has joined the global community to commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
It also urges enhanced protection and freedom for media practitioners in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Saturday and signed by its National President, Comrade James Ezema, ABJFN highlighted the perils faced by journalists in the course of their duties, including physical attacks, harassment, and unlawful detentions.
“As we mark this significant day, we demand an end to impunity against journalists and call for unrestricted access to information to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation,” Ezema said.
ABJFN, a non-governmental organisation established in 2023, noted that impunity has emboldened perpetrators and made it increasingly difficult for journalists to carry out their roles effectively.
“The group called on all levels of government to take definitive steps to ensure the safety and protection of journalists.
“Journalists are not criminal elements, and journalism must not be criminalised in Nigeria.
“We urge security agencies to see journalists as partners in nation-building, not as adversaries,” Ezema added.
The association praised the United Nations for its work in promoting the safety of journalists and tackling impunity, specifically acknowledging the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity as a significant global initiative.
“To mitigate the negative impacts of fake news in Nigeria, we urge journalists to uphold professionalism in their work and report attacks through appropriate channels,” ABJFN advised.
“We also call on advocates of professional journalism to support the drive for factual reporting and ethical standards.”
ABJFN reiterated its key demands, including an end to impunity, guaranteed safety for media professionals, and unrestrained access to information.
The statement emphasised that these measures are essential for countering fake news and fostering a culture of responsible journalism.
The statement concluded, “As we commemorate this important day, we remember the journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
“We honour their memory by advocating for a safe and supportive environment for all media professionals.
