30 DAYS OF TINUBU’S ADMINISTRATION.
Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, with Olusegun Obasanjo, a retired Army General and former military Head of State, as the elected President under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The People’s Democratic Party ruled Nigeria for straight 16 years with, Obasanjo, late Yar’dua and Goodluck Jonathan in succession.
The sixteen-year uninterrupted political dominance of the PDP was, sadly, marked by economic depression, corruption and untold hardship. Expectedly, Nigerians became tired of PDP, describing the party and PDP President Jonathan, as clueless and confused.
The abysmal performance of the PDP created a grand opportunity for the opposition party, Action Congress of Nigeria ACN, to forge an alliance with a faction of the PDP and Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change, which gave birth to a new political party, the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The electorate believed so much in the APC Presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who as a military Head of State, left the Nigerian public with an impression of someone who hated corruption, and who would decisively fight corruption and rid Nigeria’s public office of corrupt public office holders. The electorate, therefore, voted overwhelmingly for Gen. Buhari, the Presidential candidate of the APC in the Presidential elections of 2015.
Unfortunately, the new president fell ill and was absent for months in some foreign hospitals, receiving treatment, while the nation’s problems of corruption and insecurity worsened. The agents of insecurity continued to operate under various names, ranging from bandits, through kidnappers, Fulani herdsmen, to Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists.
In the midst of widespread insecurity, corruption and hardship, another election was held in 2023, and the APC king maker himself won in a very tribalistic election, reminiscent of post-independence elections. The question now is: are we still at the cross-road or has the Messiah come?
Right at Eagle square, the new President, in his inaugural speech, broke a jinx of over 20 years in his inaugural speech by removing fuel subsidy. In a matter of days, thereafter, he removed some powerful individuals: the Governor of Central Bank and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission. All Service Chiefs were retired and replaced while some hitherto untouchable individuals at the villa were also removed and replaced. Within his first 20 days, the new President took critical official decisions that kept the government running more efficiently.
The new President has done so well that some of his erstwhile enemies are beginning to like him. Will Tinubu create a Government template for Nigeria as he did in Lagos?
The decisions so far taken by Tinubu’s Government within these 20 days show that there is hope for Nigeria. Let’s keep hope alive.
