Rep Dekor Urges Young Ogoni Lawyers to Champion Development, Reject Cultism

A member of House of Representatives representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Robinson Dekor, has urged young Ogoni lawyers to use their knowledge and profession to drive development in Ogoni land, while calling for a united front against cultism and other social vices.
Rep Dekor made the call on Wednesday in Abuja when he received members of the 2025 Ogoni Bar Aspirants on a courtesy visit to his office.
He congratulated the new lawyers for their achievement, describing them as a reflection of the resilience and intellectual strength of the Ogoni people.
“I am a very proud Ogoni man. Nobody can marginalize the Ogoni people anymore because we have some of the best brains in this country,” he said.
The lawmaker said although the Ogoni people had suffered years of neglect despite contributing significantly to Nigeria’s oil wealth, they were gradually witnessing renewed government attention and development.
He urged the young lawyers to return home and contribute to rebuilding their communities through legal advocacy, mentorship and public service.
Dekor also expressed concern over the growing menace of cultism and drug abuse among youths, describing them as major threats to the future of Ogoni land.
He called on the legal practitioners to lead campaigns against the social vices and ensure that individuals involved in cult activities were not entrusted with public office.
On the nation’s economy, Dekor acknowledged the hardship Nigerians were facing but appealed for patience, saying the ongoing economic reforms by the Federal Government would eventually yield prosperity.
He discouraged young Nigerians from seeking opportunities abroad at all costs, insisting that Nigeria remained their home and that they had a responsibility to contribute to its development.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of the 2025 Ogoni Bar Aspirants, Dr. Gawuga Thompson Baala, commended Dekor for his commitment to the development of Ogoni land and his efforts in creating opportunities for the people.
Baala said the delegation visited to appreciate the lawmaker’s support for Ogoni youths and to seek stronger collaboration in advancing education, employment and infrastructure development across the area.
He also called for sustained government investment in key projects, employment opportunities and programmes that would improve the socio-economic well-being of the Ogoni people.
