Tragedy: How illegal clinic run by quacks led to pregnant woman’s death in Ondo
Tragedy struck in Sabo, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, as a pregnant woman identified as Iyanu lost her life following alleged medical mismanagement at an unregistered health facility run by unqualified personnel.
The suspects, Kehinde Olawuyi, 36, and his wife, Eniola Olawuyi, are accused of operating the illegal medical facility at Orita, Odigbo, without the required approvals.
Police said a report was received on January 18, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m., alleging that the couple had been engaging in medical quackery, which resulted in Iyanu’s death.
According to a police statement, the suspects allegedly admitted the 28-year-old victim on January 4, 2026, around noon, for childbirth at the illegal facility.
It was further alleged that the delivery was mishandled in an unprofessional manner, causing the woman to lose consciousness and bleed profusely.
She was rushed to another medical facility in Odigbo for emergency treatment, but it was already too late.
“Despite efforts by medical personnel, she was later confirmed dead,” the Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, said.
Jimoh added that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are not registered medical practitioners, confirming that the facility was being operated illegally.
He said investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
The police command warned members of the public against patronising unregistered and illegal medical facilities, urging residents of Ondo State to always seek medical care from licensed and certified health institutions.
The command also appealed to members of the public with credible and actionable information that could aid in the arrest of individuals involved in medical quackery to report promptly to the nearest police station, assuring that all information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
Meanwhile, the command last week arrested one Nasiru Idris for allegedly operating an illegal clinic at Ore, also in Odigbo Local Government Area.
Idris was accused of dispensing medical services without being a registered professional.
The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation by the command’s surveillance team, during which the 25-year-old suspect was apprehended.
Police said a search of the clinic led to the recovery of various medical items, including injection needles, medical drips, bandages and assorted medical kits.
“Subsequently, a thorough search of his residence was conducted with a duly signed search warrant, during which used injection bottles, needles and syringes were recovered,” Jimoh said.
He added that preliminary investigations confirmed that Idris is not a registered medical practitioner and that the clinic was being operated illegally.
