During a session on Tuesday, the Senate debated a motion sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi West, with Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume as a co-sponsor. Senator Karimi highlighted the skyrocketing prices of goods and household items in the country, resulting in high inflation and weakened purchasing power for many Nigerians.

Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan emphasized the urgent need for Senate leadership to engage with the Executive branch to address the food shortage in the country. The recent suspension of taxes on imported food items by the Federal Government was noted, but Senators expressed concern that efforts such as providing fertilizers to farmers have not been effectively implemented.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio echoed concerns over the escalating food crisis and stressed that the Federal Government must find a solution. The Senate unanimously passed a resolution urging the Federal Government to swiftly tackle the food insecurity crisis to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

The rising cost of living, particularly food inflation, has prompted the National Assembly to take action, calling on the Federal Government to do everything in its power to urgently address the situation.
