The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and its counterpart, Trade Union Congress, TUC, Wednesday night sheathed their swords as they suspended a once declared indefinite nationwide strike, following the intervention of the National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu.
The organized labour union announced the suspension of strike at a meeting between the union leaders and the NSA, which we gathered commenced around 7 pm and lasted for about an hour.
The National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, made the disclosure before the newsmen in Abuja.
Tony Etim was quoted as saying, “The NEC of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike.
“We did this based on our trust for the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who gave us his words.”
Earlier, members of the organized labour on one hand and the federal government team on the other hand led by Nuhu Ribadu, along with the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong had entered into a negotiation in the afternoon of Wednesday which culminated in the decision to suspend the industrial action later in the evening of Wednesday.
During the meeting, the NSA had informed that security agents succeeded in apprehending persons fingered in the brutalization of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero in Imo State.
Recall that the NLC and the TUC had declared a nationwide demonstration which entered the second day, following alleged assault on the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, over the failure of the Imo State government to clear the backlog of salaries owed the workers and the failure of the federal government to implement some of the agreements reached on October 2, 2023, which came as a result of
the hardship faced by workers in the aftermath of the removal of fuel subsidy in the country.
